Papers, 1903-1952.

Correspondence, miscellany and photographs, 1902-1952. The vast majority of the collection consists of correspondence, letters sent and received to naval and army officers, during his assignments in World War II, 1941-1945. Photographs are from World War II and are of the Caribbean and the islands and atolls of the Central Pacific as well as military figures, including General Giraud, ADMs Nimitz and Spruance. Miscellany contains reports, rosters, certificates, diplomas, citations, and news clippings.

John H. Hoover was born in Seville, Ohio in 1887. He was a 1907 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy and served in World War I aboard the USS Cushing. A submariner, aviator, and surface warfare officer, he graduated from the Naval War College in 1932 and from the Army War College in 1937.
